BASIS (Stored Potatoes) qualification available for the first time as part of this course
Adrian Cunnington at Potato Storage Insight, has been delivering an annual, certificated Potato Store Managers' Course for close to 30 years now, most recently as part of the PSI offer since 2022.
The details for the 2024 course are now available and we will be running on 28th and 29th February at The Crown in Boroughbridge, Yorkshire. It is a chance for new, young trainees (or even slightly older ones!) to benefit from the expertise that will be on hand from both Adrian and ex-SBCSR colleague Glyn Harper (below), himself a trainer since 2010.
The two day, relaxed residential format of the course focuses on discussion-based delivery and practical, interactive training sessions to maximise delegate engagement and yet provide an effective way of developing understanding and practical implications of storage management protocols. This often extends into the discussions at the bar and an informal dinner is included as part of the course package for all delegates.
Risk and cost management feature strongly on the curriculum for the course as these are such critical factors in the operation of commercial storage practices today.
There is extensive coverage of the various disease threats that have to be dealt with by store managers and also empasis placed on managing sprout control across stores holding crops for differing target markets.
That's not to forget about ventilation which is fundamental to environmental management of every potato store. Our course helps to provide a good understanding of the principles of air distribution which are key to the performance of so many stores (and the crops within them) across our industry, with each one needing to be tailored to a specific market sector.
New for 2024 is the chance to wrap the course up with an optional BASIS (Stored Potatoes) examination. This give delegates chance to gain a widely-recognised BASIS qualification which is ideally suited to anyone who specialises in potato storage and is not able to draw on a wider BASIS ticket that might come with field-based agronomy training. The inclusion of the BASIS course content will also enhance the agrochemical mangement element for all delegates whether they choose to take the exam (held in late March) or not.
